Queer Spirituality Chapter in Gender, Sex, and Relationship Diversity Therapy: Theory and Practice
The purpose of this chapter is to consider the clinical implications of working with queerness and spirituality, faith, or religion within a therapeutic setting. Few counselling trainings explore faith in depth, and some courses do not discuss this at all. For gender, sexual, and relationship diverse (GSRD) communities the connection with faith and spirituality can be far more nuanced than is often acknowledged. It is important for practitioners to consider these nuances in order to work with clients ethically surrounding spirituality issues and to reduce the risk of harm in therapy. This chapter discusses the intersections of faith and spirituality within a GSRD context to support practitioners working with these communities. There is consideration of addressing ethical dilemmas and areas for reflection in clinical supervision. This chapter discusses the impact of conversion practices and supporting clients who have been in these situations. Finally, there is exploration of the impact of acceptance and celebration of GSRD identities and spirituality.
